Celebrating the Long Summer Evenings

Yesterday my husband and I took advantage of the long hours of daylight by engaging in one of our favorite activities: hiking, this time at Windy Hill Open Space Preserve.

Ending our work day around 5:00 PM, a 20-minute drive had us at the trailhead in Portola Valley, where we headed up Hammes Gulch Trail, across the undulating Lost Trail, and down Razorback Ridge trail and eventually back to our car.

An 8-mile hike, with time for good conversation and good exercise, followed by a tasty, healthy dinner (scallops in garlic; steamed new potatoes, fresh vegetables and a glass of wine) works for us!

Windy Hill Open Space Preserve - Just one of the benefits of living in San Mateo County and the Silicon Valley!

Looks like a fun place to hike!   I am a little skittish about just blazing trails out here because of the ticks - but this spring we have had black bear wandering our town!!!  - added caution ....    my kids are in CA, and we cannot wait to visit!

Dagny, we have things we need to be careful of hiking here--namely, the ever-present poison oak--but deer ticks carrying lyme disease is rare for us. Where in California do your kids live?

OOh, I love these Greeeeeeeeeen pictures!  I feel cooler and refreshed already!  Your post makes a reader want to go there.  Thanks for sharing, and thanks for stopping by my hot, dry, sunny Tucson blog!

Cara, you would have enjoyed this morning's hike -- a friend and I hit the trails through the redwood trees just before dawn--put in about 7 miles of hiking, with a couple of miles of that running, and back at my computer by 7:30! I love the differences in our area.

OOh, jealous!  Good for you! I overslept and woke up at 7:30 - too late to walk already.  Treadmill I guess.  :(

Cara, when you need a reprieve from the heat, head our way to enjoy our moderate climate -- and come join me for a hike in the redwoods.

Lottie: you seem to have so much fun! I can't wait till my kids are older and my husband and I can just do things like that again. It's fun to take the kiddos hiking but you just can't do an 8-miler! Hopefully when they're older, they'll run with me!

I do have fun, Cari. I love to work hard and play hard, both. How old are your kids? I've got a great 1-1/2 mile hike to a hut for an overnighter to tell you about.

Love the last picture of the hubby.  Sounds like you two always have such a good time.  I looove seafood-can never get enough!

Hi Debra -- seafood dinners are the best, aren't they? (and you're right--Gene and I do have good times together, even though he won't smile for pictures! We're working on that.)
