Cara Mancuso of Tucson Arizona wrote a powerful blog here. We must figure out what our mission or purpose is, in blogging just as in other areas.
I Propose...A PURPOSE!
I recently read a thought-provoking post by Reynold Bascos, entitled, Just Do It ... What's Your Story. Within it, Reynold mentioned that he was new to real estate AND AR, did a lot of lurking and reading, (6 months worth) and hesitated in writing a blog post. He confessed dreaming about having his first post featured. Well, he finally posted, and yes, he achieved his dream - so congratulations Reynold!!
I keep thinking about his story, and the comment I left on his blog. I've decided to expound on the thought, and share it on AR. Because, in my first two months, I've discovered my true purpose, my GOAL of blogging, and I think it's important that all bloggers KNOW their goals.
Here's my comment: "[I post a lot of information to Localism, because the goal of my blogging is to become a local resource. As a newbie of almost 2 months, I've been "lucky" enough to receive three featured posts - but none of these were in pursuit of my "goal". They were about a book report, google, and buyers wanting "deals".
They were a huge adrenaline rush and I was thrilled to be recognized on Active Rain, but again, I remind myself that my GOAL is to inform consumers about my beautiful surroundings in Tucson, AZ. I've noticed that those aren't the particular style likely to be "featured" but my ultimate goal is to promote Tucson.]
I've read the blogs that list lots of statistics and are founts of information. They were the bloggers I was afraid of in the first place when I argued I wasn't "smart enough" to be a blogger to the AR staff person that called me. (Joel) I call these bloggers the "Educators"
I've enjoyed the blogs that have beautiful photos, and get excited when they print that the copies are for anyone, with no copy-write restrictions. I've changed my background photo on my computer countless times. I call these the "Photographers"
Then there's the bloggers that leave recipes and jokes, or a riddle a day. They share lots of humorous stories. I love to read a few mixed in amongst the other styles I subscribe to. They provide a great break. I call these bloggers the "Comics"
We are all familiar with the listing agents out there that have no personal stories to share. Their blogs consist of advertisement after advertisement of their newest listing. AR is their platform for getting the word out for their listings. I call them, of course, the "Listers"
Then there are the community updaters. They lovingly describe what's happening in their area, share photos, list events, and generally make you want to come for a visit, or better yet, buy a home in that vicinity. I'll call them "Resourcers"
I'm sure there are many more styles you could add, but I return to my question of goals. In blogging, what is your goal? Are you here to network, socialize, advertise, entertain, be a resource, vent, or even, all of the above?
I love the adreniline rush of a featured post - it keeps you going when you hit blogging burnout. And, as professionals, we want/need to earn an income. But what is your driving force? Why are you here on Active Rain? Why are you blogging?
Zig Ziglar says the following: "Outstanding people have one thing in common: an absolute sense of mission."
Go become an outstanding blogger. Whatever your goals-your purpose-your mission -- strive to be outstanding in your field - and success, and readers, will follow!
Do it...on purpose.
