Getting Ready to Enjoy Martin's Beach, CA 94019

Yesterday we closed on my buyers' purchase of a little cottage in Martin's Beach, CA.
They are ecstatic, and as soon as I delivered their keys to them this afternoon, off they went on the 45-minute drive across the Peninsula to check on their wonderful, magical spot.

View Larger Map View Larger Map
Martin's Beach, San Mateo County, CADeck at #10 Martin's Beach, CAInside cottage at Martin's Beach, CALocated about 7 miles south of Half Moon Bay, on the San Mateo County Coast, is an enclave of about 50 cottages that cling to the side of the cliffs, just off Highway 1, the Cabrillo Highway. There is no hint of this settlement from the highway, and few people know about these cottages at Martin's Beach.

This is a special community where a few people live year round, but most are cottages used as weekend retreats and family vacation spots. Many of these little cottages have been in the same family for generations, passed down from grandparent, to parent, to child. Memories of bonfires on the beach, potluck dinners with friends and neighbors, and carefree days are precious to those who were fortunate to spend time here over the years.

These are leased cottages, and the landowner appears to have no intention of renewing the leases once they run out in approximately 10 years. So now, with the end in sight, some owners are choosing to cash out while there's a bit of value left and while there are some all-cash buyers able and willing to pay to create their own family memories over the next 10 or so years.

To my buyers --
I wish you years of joy in your special spot with your children, grandchildren, and friends. Rich memories will be made here, I'm certain. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your adventure.

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!

Lottie, I bet you created a client for life by helping them locate and close on this property.  Congrats on the closing.

Congratulations, Lottie.  As Joan, says, not the easiest of sales.  But you are right, memories will be created.

I hope I've created a client for life, Mary Kay! I sold their daughter a home a couple of years ago, and I was very flattered when they asked my help in locating a close-in vacation retreat spot. I'd LOVE to work with them again.

Joan, I was simply fortunate in having clients with the financial where-with-all to afford this type of purchase. It's not an investment, that's for sure -- except an investment in memories and happiness.

Hello Jane -- these buyers are two of the people I highly admire; it's delightful to see them so anxious to share their treasure with the extended family and friends.

Thank you for sharing Martin's Beach with us.  I've lived in Menlo Park since 1975 and have never heard of it.  Good for you!

Hi Marge -- And doesn't Martin's Beach sound good now, during our September heat wave?  Wish we were there!

Hi! I realize this was a couple years agao but curious what the status of homes/homeowners are at Martin's beach? It seems the land is technically "leased" until 2021 and after that the actual owner of Martin's beach could do whatever they want? What is the story for home owners then? Or prospective buyers? I am curious as we looked briefly for a beach cottage there but were weary of the uncertain fate cottage owners seem to have.

Any insight you have would be great as it really does seem like a beautiful place.

Hi Michelle,

I'm so sorry--I guess because this post is a couple of years old, I was no longer notified of your comment. Most of the leases now have about 9 years left; a buyer needs to expect that the cottages will revert to the landowner at lease end. So--one mustn't consider this an investment, but rather a vacation property, or a rental (with extra expense!)

As I write this today, no cottages are on the market, but that changes. If you give me a direct contact, I'd be happy to keep you updated.
