My Kodak Moment - Reveling in the Swiss Alps
The Year: 2006
The Place: Along the Panoramic Trail above the town of Murren in the Grindelwald area of Switzerland
The story behind the photo: Hiking is a favorite past time of my husband's and mine. In 2006 we spent about 9 days in the Grindelwald area of Switzerland, which certainly lives up to its reputation for beauty.
Our hiking adventure began in the town of Meiringen, where we left the train (and our luggage) and set out walking to a mountain hut at Grosse Scheidegg. The next day we hiked a circuitous route down to Grindelwald where we were reunited with our suitcases and rolled them up to the inn which became home for much of our stay.
Every day we'd set off for another hiking adventure -- to Schynige Platte or Wengen, to Kleine Scheidegg and down to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, up peaks like the Faulhorn, and to mountain hamlets like Gimmelwald. We reveled in the beauty of wildflower covered hillsides, the sight of mountain sheep cooling off on snow banks, the amazing waterfalls. Memories were created of the fellow adventurers we'd meet and greet on the superbly marked trails, the mountain huts where we'd stop for a lunch of sausage, cheese and beer. Always present were the majestic peaks of the Eiger, the Monch, and the Jungfrau. It was sensory overload--in the best possible way.
Our last day in the alps was spent hiking along the Panoramic Trail above Murren and Gimmelwald. Like most of our other hikes, this one was picture perfect. The emotions of the week called out to me, and compelled me to salute the area in some way, so a bit of yoga just came naturally. My husband took this shot, with the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau in the background, soft meadow with wildflowers in front, and me saying my thanks for memories that will last a lifetime.
