December's Season of Celebrations & Sharing Contest-"Nothing Else Matters When You're Hungry"

"Nothing Else Matters When You're Hungry"

Second Harvest Food Bank appeal

So proclaims the billboard that grabbed my attention last week while driving down Highway 101 from San Francisco to Palo Alto. And the postcard in my office mailbox today. It's a refrain that's hard to ignore.

The need in our seemingly wealthy communities of the Mid-peninsula and Silicon Valley is great.

Hunger in San Mateo and Santa Clara CountiesDid you know that 1 in 10 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties receive food aid from Second Harvest Food Bank? I didn't. I had no idea the need was so acute!

Luckily our area also has many generous people who care and have the resources to try to alleviate the hunger. Food barrels are going in many businesses around our towns, and I'm happy to say that my office, Today Sotheby's International Realty, once again has barrels in the lobby, awaiting donations.

Today Sotheby's International RealtyWe're easy to find. Sotheby's International Realty is located at 1250 San Carlos Avenue, Suite 101, in downtown San Carlos. (Corner of San Carlos Avenue and Walnut Street.)

Why not pick up some extra canned goods on your next shopping trip and drop them off at our office? If it's easier for you, call, text or email me and I'll pick them up from your San Carlos, Belmont or Redwood City home.

Please bring non-perishables, not in glass bottles. Especially suitable are:

  • Tuna, canned meats
  • Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup)
  • Peanut butter
  • Low-sugar cereal
  • 100% fruit juices
  • Canned fruit, packed in juice
  • Canned vegetables
  • Cans with pop-top lids

Second Harvest Food Bank collection barrelsLet's fill those barrels, shall we?

I'd love to see our hallway overflowing with bags of cans!

I'd love to take a picture of this year's barrels overflowing with food. I promise to share it with you all.

We can make a real difference in our community!

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!

What is sad is we can't feed our own but we can send trillions over seas to others, charity starts at home.

Great cause! I remember food drives when my boys were in school.  I always donate to the Post Office drive.  I try and remembe to buy extra at the store to drop in the bins.  Hunger is something that should be easy to cure in this day and age!

Lottie, that slogan really got to me too. There are so many that are going hungry, what a great thing to be involved in.

Lottie, Great cause to support!  Our country has too much for anyone to be truly hungry.  We have quite a few food banks in our area that stay in high demand.

I know a lot of the food banks here in NYC are all empty!  One in four New Yorkers don;t have enough food.  It is so sad.  Glad you are doing something about it!

Great to be able to help feel that need!  And I agree that the slogan just kind of hits you in the pit of the stomach and won't let go....Powerful!

Lottie - This is great!  Hopefully those barrels will be overflowing.

Lottie - I was amazed to find out from our local food bank how much food they have to throw out ..... it seems that they get a lot of food that is stale dated and they simply can not take the chance of it being bad so it is thrown out.

Lottie, This is a perfect time to leverage the buy-one, get-one free offers that many chain grocery stores offer.  Keep one for and give one.  I bag the extra item and drop it in the barrel on my way out the door. It does not get any easier to give.  I know the barrels in your office will over-flow. I look forward to seeing the photos!

Joyce, if we only were a bit more careful and wasted less, we could share more. One of my 2012 goals!

Jo - good for you! And I agree, we should be able to help end hunger.

Andrea - I can't get that slogan out of my mind. As I sat eating a delicious mushroom omelette this morning, it's there, in the back of my head.

Bliz, it's a good thing we have our food banks. 1 in 10 hunry in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties?? Something isn't right.

Barbara -- I think we should all post photos of our food collection barrels and aim to have them spilling over with good, healthy food before the end of the month

Jennifer - 1 in 4??? Perhaps the tap on the 'trickle down' theory needs to be opened a bit more.

Nancy - I don't know why this year hunger in our communities is hitting me harder than in other years, perhaps because I'm not hungry?

Michelle - I intend to help make those barrels overflow, even though I hate shopping. I think it's my personal mission this holiday season.

Kathy, I think that's a problem--too often people scrounge through their cupboards to find items to donate--often the cans lurking in the back are the ones that make their way to the food banks. We just need to become more aware.

Kathleen, it starts with mindfulness--you've found a great, simple way to be effective.
