Halloween Safety Tips - Not Just for San Carlos, CA

Halloween fun

Trick-or Treating is a long revered tradition in many of our communities up and down the San Francisco Peninsula, in the Silicon Valley, across the state and across the nation.

Keeping the little ones safe while enjoying the excitement of the evening is pretty basic:

  • don't use masks that might obstruct a child's vision
  • avoid costumes that are loose or baggy
  • Add some white or reflective strips to clothing
  • and of course, keep with parents

Safety becomes a bit more difficult with older kids ages 12 and over, who want to go out without parents hovering nearby. In advance, you might want to review some basics:

  • Plan the route ahead of time and stick to it
  • Have at least 2 buddies along
  • Do not take shortcuts through backyards, alleys, parks or dark areas
  • Do not go inside any home
  • Do not take rides
  • Carry a flishlight or glow stick
  • Use caution when crossing streets
  • Set a time limit for trick-or-treating

Lottie, excellent safety tips, the two that are always emphasized by Phoenix Police are, don't Trick or Treat alone and never go into any home.

These days we just go out with the kids, bring flashlights, and stick together.  It wasn't like that growing up - when I was 10 we just went out on our own.

Nancy, do you get many Trick or Treaters where you are in Phoenix? Hope you have fun--and that everyone is safe.

Hi Roger - we need to be aware of things my parents didn't worry about (at least I don't think they worried!)

Bryan, I guess it depends on the kids and the towns. In San Carlos you'll see small groups of 10-12 year olds out and about, but not many. Back in the day my brothers and I would run all around town and return home at the appointed hour.

Lottie, we do get a lot of Trick or Treaters. Our neighborhood has acquired quite a few new families over the past few years and it seems like all of them have young children.
