Halloween Safety Tips for Homeowners

Halloween safety tips for Trick-or-Treaters are shared widely, and rightly so. It's an exciting evening for youngsters and they need reminders about safety while they are out having fun.

Halloween presents some safety concern for homeowners, too.

Remember:

  • Keep your home and yard safe for trick-or-treaters. Remove garden hoses, toys, bikes and other trip hazards
  • Sweep leaves away from sidewalks
  • Place jack-o-lanterns up off the ground so that children's costumes won't come in contact with the flames.
  • Better yet, use a battery-operated "candle" to avoid all chance of fire danger
  • Lighting is important--have the porch light on, and lights along the walkways, too.
  • Pets need special consideration--it's a good time to invite them inside with you!
  • Finally, be aware of your neighborhood; keep an eye out to discourage poor behavior; encourage motorists to slow down.

Wishing you all a safe and fun Halloween!

Trick or treat!  These are great tips,  especially for new homeowners who might be hosting their first HALLOWEEN trick or treaters who just might be their neighbors for a long time!

Hi Lottie, these are great reminders - and common courtesy too. Hope we get a few of the little ghouls this year. The kids around here are pretty young and tend to go to the big school parties.

Hi Lottie, thanks so much. And I forgot about the pets. That is so important as well. Thanks for the post.

Lottie, excellent post to help make Halloween safer for everyone including pets. I'm especially careful to make sure my cats are inside all night. Halloween unfortunately brings out some real sickos.

Jeff, some of these tips are simple, yet might be forgotten, especially by new homeowners.

Laura, I hope you enjoy your Halloween evening!

Debb, I was disappointed a number of years when NO trick-or-treaters came to our house. Neighborhoods evolve and there is an ebb and flow of youngsters.

Terri, I've seen frightened animals on Halloween and on July 4th -- nicer for them to be safely inside for those evening.

Judi, Halloween is such an exciting event for childrens they need safety reminders--and we need to help them be safe while having fun.

Nancy, it's good to know your kitties will be snug inside with you!
