Where did your breakfast come from?

As he often does on Sunday morning, Gene was busy whipping up his yummy cheese and mushroom omelets today when his idle Sunday morning thoughts included:

Where does our breakfast come from?

omeletSo he read labels and discovered: our simple breakfast had ingredients from four continents.

North America

  • eggs - California (the town of Ripon not too far away - we could consider this local)
  • milk - California (likely nearby, too)
  • cheddar cheese - Vermont
  • marmalade - Canada!
  • bread - US-state unknown

South America

  • Parmesan cheese  - Argentina (funny, right?)

Europe

  • dried mushrooms - Italy

Africa

  • salt and pepper - South Africa

I'll be walking down to one of our local Farmer's Markets in a bit, where I'll be buying local produce, maybe a piece of fresh fish or some artisan bread or cheese made here in California. And I'll be thinking how amazing it is to see where our food originates and how it travels the world to end up on our tables.

Fresh and local ranks high in my book, and even more so on my plate. However, at times, those delicacies from elsewhere fill a much needed niche. Breakfast sounds yummy. I had a smoothie - boring.

Lottie, great reminder how dependent we are for our food and something as basic and often taken for granted as breakfast! Santa Fe has an awesome Farmer's Market with a range of food grown and/or raised with TLC in New Mexico.

Lottie, One of the many things I like about Whole Foods is that I can get a lot of local fresh and well as local just about anything. Of course, I'm into Organic now which they have a lot of that too. 

That looks like a great breakfast ... followed by shopping for produce at a local Farmer's Market ... what a great start to any day.

Emily, I chatted with some of the vendors at our local farmer's market today; water issues will be affecting some of our availability and definitely prices soon. I wore my Active Rain "let it rain" shirt, my version of a rain dance, and a great conversation starter.

Laura, many farmers' markets in San Francisco are open year round; others in the suburban areas are seasonal.

Bahman, pictures of food usually make me hungry, too. Hope you enjoyed your meals, wherever you ate them.

Kathleen, we like Whole Foods too, and the closest one is only 5 blocks away! Their organic blueberries are superb!

We really don't look at the origin of the food we eat, at least I don't. I just look at the ingredients. Buying domesticl if you can certainly makes the most sense.

Interesting thought, Lottie.  I pay a lot of attention to what is in my food, but haven't paid as much attention from where it's from.  Probably something I should be more aware of.

Janet, I did, indeed, enjoy the farmer's market. Visiting there is always a treat, and I came home loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Jane, fun how an idle thought made us aware of how international even common ingredients are.
