Life on My Planet - Every Day Would Be Earth Day

At the beginning of the month, Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector, challenged us to imagine a planet where some of the problems we face here and now don't exist.

On my planet, we'd all take to heart the following words of Helen Keller: "I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble."

On my planet, every day would be Earth Day. We would appreciate our world, and take care of it and the people in it.

Sweeping the neighborhood streets on a monthly basis - a small task but beneficial. Imagine if we all did that!

Street sweeping along Polk Street, SF

(Gene, taking part in the Middle Polk Neighborhood Association monthly cleanup)

Thinking about the way we use water, especially here in arid California, - making changes in our landscaping can add beauty to our environment while using little water. Imagine if more of us changed water-hungry lawns to flowering bushes, shrubs and trees that attract birds, butterflies and ladybugs! A small task.

Garden with low water use plants

(front garden of clients' home - no thirsty lawn, frangrance and birds)

We would take time to actively celebrate our world. A picnic in a park; a stroll through a magnificent grove of trees; introducing a child to the joys of a lake, a stream, a beach; a hike in the glorious hills.

Marin County hills in spring

We would be more aware of our fellow inhabitants, less judgmental and more helpful. More of us would manifest our care in similar ways to a beautiful act of humanity which I witnessed recently, when a local shop manager took a moment before opening up for the day to check on the homeless man sleeping on the street, then bent down and left a Clif Bar for the sleeping man. A small act of kindness and care, but powerful.

(no photo here - but the picture is indelibly planted in my mind)

Small tasks add up, and with everyone's cooperation, become great and noble.

There's still time to share your vision of a better planet. Go to "On My Planet....(a new Active Rain Challenge)" read more and share your ideas with us.

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!

Good morning Lottie. I have a picture of your planet and it is certainly a place most of us would want to live. It is each of our responsibilities to make this planet a better place to live.

Lottie  Helen Keller's words just became ingrained in this little brain of mine.  I sweep my street weekly and grow flowers for the bees and birds...

Good for you, John! I love those words of Helen Keller's; have them posted on my bulletin board at my desk.

I hate to say this but the reason you don't have a picture of the sleeping homeless man with a Clif Bar is because somebody promptly stole the Clif Bar the minute you turned your back. Oh, wait, what were we discussing? Oh, yeah, human kindness.

Nope; some things are too touching and personal to intrude with a camera. I love the mental picture I carry, though.

Hi Bob - I hope so--it's the only place we have to live, and I don't want to trade it in!

Joan, picking up after ourselves, appreciating what we have and being kind to others aren't big, exciting concepts, but they surely make life better.

I would really enjoy living on your planet, Lottie.  I try to teach my boys to have as little impact on our world as possible whether it be picking up trash or returning our shopping cart to the store (yes, people actually DO that!)

Lottie: To me it's frightening how we are "paving over" the planet. Yes, neighborhoods are being built that make it great to live there, but where is "nature"? Maybe I'm weird, but every time I hear someone say "Disneyland" when asked where they will go, I cringe. That is not our natural planet. Give me beach, forest and mountains any time.

What a great blog! Congrats on your success for the April contest.  I couldn't agree more.  I'm on the same page with you.  Protecting our environment should be a daily excursion, not a once a year celebration and thought.

Lottie, you're right.  Every small thing that each and every one of us does to keep this planet the marvelous place it is makes a difference.

Posted by Sharon Parisi, Dallas Homes (United Real Estate Dallas ) over 3 years ago

Hella, development is a big issue in the SF Bay Area -- demand for housing is so strong and property so expensive, developers want to go up -- and up and up. Battles are raging in SF and Oakland to prevent the waterfront becoming lined with high-rises. Like most things in life, we need to find a balance.

Posted by Lottie Kendall, Serving San Mateo County and San Francisco (Today | Sotheby's International Realty) over 3 years ago

Thank you, Joan. We can choose to treat our planet gently every day, whether or not it's proclaimed "Earth Day."

Jan, agreed. (and thanks.)

Sharon, "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
