I am a raving fan, but I'm not talking about the SF Giants, or any sports team.
Last night I had the opportunity to attend Street Requiem: for those who have died on the street. I was excited about this when I first learned about it (on Facebook, no less) and it didn't disappoint.
Composed in Australia in 2014 by Kathleen McGuire, Andy Payne and Jonathon Welch to "bring a sense of peace, remembrance and hope to communities struggling to come to terms with street violence, war and a loss of safety on our streets" last night was its California premier.
Featuring the S.O.S. (Singers of the Street) with choruses from several area churches, this was, without a doubt the most uplifting, memorable concert I've attended.
Frederica von Stadt, world famous mezzo-soprano, joined the Singers of the Street and the chorus -- and I do mean joined. No prima donna here; she was one with the homeless, the struggling ones. No jewels and elaborate costumes, just the same T-shirt the S.O.S. wore, and a simple outfit for the second part of the concert, the Requiem.
I am a raving fan --- of the many people who give of their talents to benefit others; of the street people who practiced long and hard to bring music to us and had the bravery to perform; and of Frederica von Stadt, who stepped off the world's opera stages to share in our common humanity.
My only regret? I took no pictures to share with you. However, a click on the link to Street Requiem will fill in the gaps. And I did find this video which I think captures some of the magic that is Frederica von Stadt.
--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!

Hello again Lottie. I had never heard Frederica until last summer when she was at Tanglewood with an ensemble. I was able to see a rehearsal as well and I agree with your assessment of her. (she is real, gifted and generous) The show you saw sounds wonderful and I enjoyed the video too.
the "city" has so many unique outlets and avenues to entertain and challenge
Sounds like a very neat and worthwhile event, it is sad to know that so many people die on the streets.
Street Requiem: for those who have died on the street. What a great event and would have loved to been there.
Lottie, I did see your post on FB and mention that they will be in San Mateo. Good to know that you enjoyed it and are a raving fan.
I would imagine it was very special and something you will remember for a long time.
What a truly inspiring event. So glad that you attended and then wrote about it.

Hi, Lottie. Frederica's voice is amazing. I'm sure this was a wonderful performance.
Lottie that is awesome - and can only imagine how inspiring it was for all in attendance. Wow!
Hi Lottie...How wonderful that you have become a raving fan of such a worthwhile cause. Although I have not heard of this before I will be on the lookout in my area.

Thanks for sharing your experience in attending I'm a Raving Fan . . . . There is just too much violence of our street and a lack of respect for other people.
Good luck and success.

Thank you for the post. I had not heard of this until I read your post.
Lottie, bet this was a great event to attend, and have not heard of this either.
What a great event. I had not heard of it either. Thank-you for sharing and increasing awareness of this.
Thanks for all of your comments. I went to another concert last night; it was enjoyable, but I'll soon forget it. Street Requiem I'll always remember, and I have a new appreciation for Frederica von Stadt - more than a fabulous voice, a wonderful person.
