Pay It Forward - a new year, a new adventure

I've written several times in the past about my #1 favorite Pay It Forward activity - "Adopting" a family at Christmas time through Compass Family Services. That remains my top endeavor and this Christmas will mark our 6th annual participation. By now, my family and I can't imagine celebrating Christmas without including the Adopt-a-Family program.

However, this year we have added a new volunteering activity which is taking me out of my element and broadening my horizons--volunteering at the Peninsula Humane Society, providing TLC for dogs awaiting adoption.

Volunteering at the SPCASince our 15 year old granddaughter loves animals and hopes to become an assistant at a veterinarian clinic, this summer my husband, Gene and I enrolled along with Credense in a very thorough training and screening program for volunteers. Various  volunteer programs are in place; Credense chose Dog TLC.

The Tom Lantos Center is housed in a state-of-the-art building (even the garage is a delight, as the cover picture shows) and is a no-kill shelter where forever families are found for 100% of the adoptable dogs and cats. While at the shelter a large number of volunteers play with, pat, cuddle, give TLC, exercise and walk dogs. We've visited with many chihuahuas, several German Shepherds, boxers, terriers, and bull dogs (sorry, I'm not personally comfortable with pit bulls; I might get there some day, but not yet.)

A benefit we discovered last Saturday: after showing a lease listing to a prospective tenant, Credense and I stopped for lunch before heading to the SPCA. We were wearing our required volunteer shirts. Credense was approached by another diner, who asked about volunteer opportunities that might suit their middle-school age son. Nice to be a good-will ambassador!

I have never owned a dog (only borrow Tanner the Golden Retriever from time to time) and am a neophyte with dogs. Not only am I helping the dogs, they are teaching me -- a win/win situation!

--- Come for a visit; Stay for a lifetime!

Good evening Lottie Kendall ,

What a wonderful thing to do! It is a win/win situation. I'm sure it means a lot to Credense for you to take such an active interest in something that means a lot to her! You are the best grand-parents ever!

Hi Dorie Dillard - it's rewarding to work alongside our grandchildren and encourage their caring for others, both two-legged and four-. I'm sure you do the same with Hudson and Beckett. Lucky us!

Hi Lottie... since pet shelters are one of my personal causes, your post made me feel really good this morning. Nothing like finding a way to help those who can't help themselves.

Good morning Lottie. Working/volunteering in a shelter can be tough. I did and it broke my heart but I have multiple dogs. Maybe you will eventually find a soul mate there.

This is a such a great way to spend your time and be the voice for our furry babies.  Credense looks like she is right in her element.  How wonderful!

Hi Lottie - Both of those efforts are wonderful to get involved with, and both can make a big difference. I'm sure you'll do a great job with the animals, too.

Lovely post Lottie Kendall and I agree, it is a "win-win".  If only everyone would practice pay it forward.

Lottie, what a great way to step out of your comfort zone. There's nothing like bonding with dogs, they give so much. I'd find it hard to not want to take them all home! I hope that one day you are comfy with pit bulls. I have one that I adopted and he came from a horrible past. He's the most wonderful dog and scared of his own shadow.

Hi Lottie -- stepping outside our typical element or comfort zones can lead to some exciting revelations -- good for you.  Definitely a win-win for all involved.

Good morning, Sally K. & David L. Hanson - the more I volunteer at the SPCA, the more I find I enjoy it.

Yes, Barbara Todaro - I learn a lot from my granddaughters, and love seeing things through their eyes.

Hi Nina Hollander and Sheila Anderson - both of you do wonderful work caring for animals who need a bit of TLC.  In the past I've always focused on people causes---but I'm growing!

Hi Belinda Spillman and Joan Cox - I love supporting my granddaughters and learning new things from them. Credense is a natural with animals, and I'm beginning!

Hello Dick Greenberg - never having spent much time around dogs, it wasn't until my daughter and granddaughter adopted dogs that I could see the bond between human and dog - now, thanks to Credense, I'm taking that a step further.

Good morning, Lisa Von Domek - it's not hard to carve out 2-3 hours a week to help in this way, plus I get time with my granddaughter. Definitely a win-win.

Hello Amanda S. Davidson - baby steps for me with the dog TLC. I never imagined I would volunteer in a pet shelter, yet here I am. So, I certainly will not say I'll avoid the pit bulls forever.
